Where Is Your Charity Going This Holiday Season?

charitiesHoliday Giving In 2014… Should You?

It’s that time of the year…

The holidays are here and everyone is in a giving mood.

Does it make you a Scrooge if you’re tired of seeing people with their hand out?

Sometimes I feel like we’re in a society where everyone is asking for something.  I get hit up every week via email, regular mail, and the media to support one event, activity, or another.

Not to mention all the other organizations that vies for my attention – like colleges, public schools, the kids’ sports teams, band groups, and religious organizations.

Maybe I’m a Grinch, but in all honesty, you can’t help everyone.

So, I like to support just a small number of groups and write bigger checks to them!

There are lots of great organizations out there… and many are worthy of your money.  But be careful, someone might smile at you with the face of charity, but they might have larceny in their heart.

Every year we read about scam artists ripping people off… and I don’t want that to happen to you.

Avoid Being Scammed By Bad Charities

Here’s what you can do to make sure your charity money reaches the people you want to help.

First, stick to the big, well known organizations.  Groups like:

These are all worthy organizations that put their funding to good use.  If you don’t want to use a “brand name” charity, do your research.

Look into the groups you want to support and review their financial statements.  Reputable organizations are not afraid to share their financial numbers… you’ll be able to see what percentage of money donated goes to various causes… and how much to overhead.

Donating money to pay a salary isn’t my idea of charity…

If you can’t get financial statements, move on.

Remember, there’s always an organization in need… every community has a food bank… seek them out… and donate.

This year we rescued another dog… and donating money to a handful of organizations near and dear to our heart.

That’s what I’m doing this year and I hope you do too.

Happy Holidays.

Profitably Yours,
